Today in class we discussed Copyright, Fair Use, and Creative Commons. We also did a fun interactive activity to review copyright friendly websites for students and teachers to use. There were a few things that I found the most interesting tonight but one of the main things was the conversation we had regarding The Utah Administrative Code regarding the sharing of curriculum materials. The picture below shows a section in the Utah Administrative Code Policy that outlines that materials developed on school time and/or with school materials should not be sold. I know several teachers that sell educational materials on sites like Teachers Pay Teachers however, they often have created those materials for classroom use and on district equipment. The conversation we had in class was very interesting yet what was more interesting was the conversations that took place the following day in one of my schools. Several of the teachers at one of my schools are in the endorsement class and they also participate in selling on Teachers Pay Teachers. In my opinion, it is extremely important to understand copyright and pay attention to those policies. Understanding the expectations and really making an effort to not break those laws is important. The conversations that came from what we learned in class this week were very thought provoking and exciting.
